Medical & lifestyle information

We will start your consultation by talking to you about your lifestyle and how your hearing loss is affecting you.

We take the time to understand your concerns before establishing the listening environments you would like to improve upon. These may be social or work environments that are important to you, or perhaps using your phone, television, or the radio at home.

Where relevant, we will also discuss your experience with tinnitus and how this is affecting you.

Audiologist performing video otoscopy

Video otoscopy

Using the most up-to-date technology allows us to test the physical condition of your outer, middle, and inner ear.

Firstly, an examination using a video otoscope will provide us with high resolution image of the inside of your ear canal. This device is placed into your ear, allowing us to check the condition of your ear canal, as well as for any ear wax blockages or fluid behind your eardrum.

The results will be visible on a screen for you to view and will be kept on your records.

Audiologist performing tympanometry

Tympanometry

We will check the condition of your middle ear by using tympanometry. This procedure uses air pressure to check that all the bones in your middle ear are working correctly.

Tympanometry will also identify if you have any eustachian tube dysfunction, preventing you from equalising the pressure in your middle ear correctly. This condition can cause a conductive hearing loss (known as glue ear) and can leave excess fluid in your middle ear cavity resulting in a dull hearing sensation, similar to that felt on an aeroplane due to changes in air pressure.

During tympanometry, you will feel a gentle pressure for a short time, as if your ear is a little bit blocked.

Audiologist performing Pure Tone Audiometry hearing tests

Hearing assessments

We will assess your hearing sensitivity using pure tone audiometry. This checks for the softest sounds you can hear across the frequency range, and will confirm whether you have a hearing loss and, if so, to what degree.

A speech in noise test will confirm how well you can hear in noisy situations, giving us a good indication of how well you would do in noise with good hearing aid intervention.

By using a soundproof room and the very best diagnostic testing equipment we offer you peace of mind that your hearing loss has been diagnosed accurately and that, should you need hearing aids, they have been fitted correctly to your hearing prescription.

Hearing summery & recommendations

Following your hearing assessment, we will take the time to fully explain our findings. Taking your individual lifestyle needs and hearing test results into account will allow us to recommend the most appropriate treatment options.

If you could benefit from hearing aids, we will offer you a demonstration of your recommended hearing aid and give you the information to make an informed decision on the best solution for you, including our honest and impartial advice on any compromises associated with various hearing aid style, performance, and cost considerations. We know that getting hearing aids can be a big commitment, so there is no pressure to purchase on the day.

If required, we will also explain and make any referrals to other medical professionals for you.
