What Makes Lyric Different
Most hearing aids work from the outside in.
They sit behind or in the outer part of your ear, picking up sound and processing it before sending it inward. That's perfectly good technology. For most people, it's the right solution.
But Lyric works differently. It sits millimetres from your eardrum - placed deep inside the ear canal by a specially trained audiologist. Which means it works with your ear's natural anatomy, not around it. Sound enters the ear the way it's supposed to. Your ear's own shape does the work of directing, filtering, and localising it.
The result, for people who are candidates, is something that sounds strikingly natural. Because it is.
And because it sits where it does - tucked completely inside the canal - nobody can see it. Not at a dinner table, not at the gym, not in a meeting and Nnt in a photograph. Completely invisible, in every situation, without any effort on your part.
That last bit matters more than it sounds. Because effort is the thing that quietly undermines most hearing aid journeys. The daily insertion and removal. The charging. The cleaning. The forgetting. Lyric removes all of it. Once it's fitted, it's fitted. You go home and live your life.
How Lyric Works
Lyric is a subscription-based device, which is different from how traditional hearing aids are purchased. Instead of buying a device outright, you pay an annual subscription - and in return, you receive ongoing replacements as needed, professional appointments throughout the year, and continuous monitoring of your ear health.
Here's why the subscription model makes sense for this type of device: Lyric's battery is sealed inside the device and cannot be changed. When the battery reaches the end of its life - typically after several weeks to a few months, depending on the individual - the old device is removed and a new one fitted in its place. Your subscription covers all of those replacements for the year, along with the clinical appointments that go with them.
There's no Bluetooth, no app and no smartphone integration. That's a deliberate design decision. Lyric focuses entirely on delivering clear, natural amplification - and doing it 24 hours a day, seven days a week, without interruption.
The only time Lyric comes out is at your replacement appointment. Everything else is simply life, as normal.

The Expertise Behind the Fitting
Lyric placement isn't a routine procedure. It requires specialist training, a steady hand, and -critically - experience.
The device sits millimetres from your eardrum. Placement depth affects sound quality, comfort, and how well the device stays in position. A shallow fit sounds different from a deep one. An uncomfortable fit is one that patients remove early and don't replace. Doing this well, consistently, is a skill that develops over repeated fittings - not one that transfers automatically from general audiology practice.
At Beckenham Hearing, Lyric is fitted by a clinician with over 30 years of experience across all areas of audiology - NHS, private practice, and complex clinical cases.
The fitting is also just the beginning. Your ear health is monitored at every replacement appointment. If something isn't right - a comfort issue, a change in ear canal condition, any irritation - it's caught and dealt with. That ongoing clinical relationship is part of what makes the subscription model work.
This is not a device you want fitted by whoever happens to be available that week.

Lyric vs. Traditional Hearing Aids
Lyric is not better than traditional hearing aids. Traditional hearing aids are not better than Lyric. They are different tools, for different people, with different priorities. Here's an honest comparison:
Lyric tends to suit people who:
- Want complete invisibility without compromise
- Find daily management of hearing aids inconvenient or difficult
- Want to hear continuously, including overnight
- Have mild to moderate hearing loss and suitable ear anatomy
- Would benefit from continuous sound input for tinnitus management
Traditional hearing aids tend to suit people who:
- Want Bluetooth streaming, app control, or connectivity features
- Have more significant hearing loss
- Prefer full control over when the device is in and out
- Want to explore a wider range of technology options
At your initial consultation, we'll walk through both options honestly. If Lyric isn't right for you, we'll say so - and talk you through what is.
