Lyric

The Invisible Hearing Aid You'll Forget You're Wearing. Because You Never Take It Out.

Lyric by Phonak sits deep inside your ear canal - placed by a trained audiologist, completely invisible to the world, and worn around the clock. No batteries to change. No charging. No taking it out before bed. Just clear, natural hearing. Day and night.

What Makes Lyric Different

Most hearing aids work from the outside in.

They sit behind or in the outer part of your ear, picking up sound and processing it before sending it inward. That's perfectly good technology. For most people, it's the right solution.

But Lyric works differently. It sits millimetres from your eardrum - placed deep inside the ear canal by a specially trained audiologist. Which means it works with your ear's natural anatomy, not around it. Sound enters the ear the way it's supposed to. Your ear's own shape does the work of directing, filtering, and localising it.

The result, for people who are candidates, is something that sounds strikingly natural. Because it is.

And because it sits where it does - tucked completely inside the canal - nobody can see it. Not at a dinner table, not at the gym, not in a meeting and Nnt in a photograph. Completely invisible, in every situation, without any effort on your part.

That last bit matters more than it sounds. Because effort is the thing that quietly undermines most hearing aid journeys. The daily insertion and removal. The charging. The cleaning. The forgetting. Lyric removes all of it. Once it's fitted, it's fitted. You go home and live your life.

How Lyric Works

Lyric is a subscription-based device, which is different from how traditional hearing aids are purchased. Instead of buying a device outright, you pay an annual subscription - and in return, you receive ongoing replacements as needed, professional appointments throughout the year, and continuous monitoring of your ear health.

Here's why the subscription model makes sense for this type of device: Lyric's battery is sealed inside the device and cannot be changed. When the battery reaches the end of its life - typically after several weeks to a few months, depending on the individual - the old device is removed and a new one fitted in its place. Your subscription covers all of those replacements for the year, along with the clinical appointments that go with them.

There's no Bluetooth, no app and no smartphone integration. That's a deliberate design decision. Lyric focuses entirely on delivering clear, natural amplification - and doing it 24 hours a day, seven days a week, without interruption.

The only time Lyric comes out is at your replacement appointment. Everything else is simply life, as normal.

Who Lyric Is Right For

Lyric isn't the right solution for everyone and a good audiologist will tell you that upfront rather than fit it and hope for the best. Candidacy depends on two things: your level of hearing loss and the anatomy of your ear canal.

Hearing loss

Lyric is designed for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss. If your loss is more severe, traditional hearing aids are likely to serve you better - and we'll tell you so.

Ear canal anatomy

Because Lyric sits deep inside the canal, the shape and size of your ear needs to be suitable for placement. Some ear canals are too narrow, or shaped in a way that makes extended deep-canal wear uncomfortable. A proper examination will tell us quickly whether you're a good candidate.

There's also a lifestyle consideration. Lyric suits people who want to wear-and-forget. Who value invisibility. Who find the daily management of traditional hearing aids frustrating or inconvenient. Who want to hear while they sleep - which matters particularly for people who experience tinnitus.

The Expertise Behind the Fitting

Lyric placement isn't a routine procedure. It requires specialist training, a steady hand, and -critically - experience.

The device sits millimetres from your eardrum. Placement depth affects sound quality, comfort, and how well the device stays in position. A shallow fit sounds different from a deep one. An uncomfortable fit is one that patients remove early and don't replace. Doing this well, consistently, is a skill that develops over repeated fittings - not one that transfers automatically from general audiology practice.

At Beckenham Hearing, Lyric is fitted by a clinician with over 30 years of experience across all areas of audiology - NHS, private practice, and complex clinical cases.

The fitting is also just the beginning. Your ear health is monitored at every replacement appointment. If something isn't right - a comfort issue, a change in ear canal condition, any irritation - it's caught and dealt with. That ongoing clinical relationship is part of what makes the subscription model work.

This is not a device you want fitted by whoever happens to be available that week.

Lyric vs. Traditional Hearing Aids

Lyric is not better than traditional hearing aids. Traditional hearing aids are not better than Lyric. They are different tools, for different people, with different priorities. Here's an honest comparison:

Lyric tends to suit people who:

  • Want complete invisibility without compromise
  • Find daily management of hearing aids inconvenient or difficult
  • Want to hear continuously, including overnight
  • Have mild to moderate hearing loss and suitable ear anatomy
  • Would benefit from continuous sound input for tinnitus management

Traditional hearing aids tend to suit people who:

  • Want Bluetooth streaming, app control, or connectivity features
  • Have more significant hearing loss
  • Prefer full control over when the device is in and out
  • Want to explore a wider range of technology options

At your initial consultation, we'll walk through both options honestly. If Lyric isn't right for you, we'll say so - and talk you through what is.

Already Wearing Lyric - Fitted Elsewhere?

This happens more than you'd think. People move. Practices stop offering Lyric. Or the experience wasn't what it should have been, and trust broke down.

If you've been wearing Lyric and need to transfer your care, we can help. We'll review your current fit, assess how things are sitting, and take over your ongoing replacements and monitoring from that point forward.

And if Lyric didn't work well for you in the past-— it's worth having a conversation before writing it off. Comfort issues, sound quality problems, and early removal are often the result of placement depth or an ill-suited initial candidacy assessment. Not the device itself. A fresh clinical look sometimes changes the conclusion.

If you’re looking for a trusted, experienced partner to support your long-term hearing health someone who takes the time, asks the right questions, and truly listens then you’re in the right place.

"After more than 30 years in hearing care – working across all audiology sectors, private and NHS medical settings, and supporting complex clinical cases – I didn’t like what I was seeing. Too many people were being given generic advice, rushed assessments, and hearing aids chosen to meet sales targets, not personal needs.

That’s why I launched Beckenham Hearing – to do things properly.

This clinic was built around best practices. It’s a place where clients are seen, listened to, and supported by someone with the experience to get it right. Appointments are unhurried. Testing is thorough and evidence-based. And every recommendation is shaped by clinical judgement – not time limits, sales pressure, or off-the-shelf solutions.

With no ties to manufacturers, every decision is made solely with your outcome in mind.

As a council member for the Association of Independent Hearing Healthcare Professionals, I also work to raise standards nationally – but the most important work still happens here, one person, one appointment, one result at a time."
