Tips and news to support your hearing health.
While you may already have reliable routines for caring for your hearing aids at home, it is just as important to protect them when you are out and about. Outdoor activities, changing weather, and daily errands can all expose your hearing aids to different risks. Here are five simple tips to help you keep your devices safe and working at their best when you’re on the go.
1. Store Them In A Hard-Shell Case
If you are taking part in activities that involve sweat, rough contact, or potential water splashes, you may need to remove your hearing aids temporarily. Always store them in a hard-shell case to keep them safe. This prevents them from being dropped, stepped on, or accidentally damaged. It’s also a good way to ensure they don’t go missing or get picked up by curious pets.
2. Wear Hearing Aid Sweatbands
Moisture can interfere with the delicate electronics inside your hearing aids. To protect them, consider using hearing aid sweatbands. These are small fabric covers that slip over your hearing aids to keep them safe from sweat, dirt, dust, and even light rain or snow. You can use them alongside regular sweatbands for added protection, especially during exercise or outdoor activities.
3. Dry With Soft Towels
Most modern hearing aids are designed with a nanocoating that makes them water-resistant, but it’s still best to dry them off as soon as possible if they get wet. Always use a soft towel and avoid heat sources such as hairdryers or microwaves, as these can melt or damage the device.
If you are caught in the rain or exposed to moisture outdoors, remove the batteries and leave your hearing aids to dry overnight. This helps prevent any trapped moisture from affecting their performance.
4. Use Antimicrobial Wipes
Bacteria thrive in warm, humid conditions, so it’s important to keep your hearing aids clean. Bring antimicrobial wipes with you when you’re out of the house so you can regularly wipe down your devices and reduce the risk of bacteria buildup. This will help maintain hygiene and keep your hearing aids in good working order.
5. Avoid High Temperatures
Extreme heat can reduce your hearing aids’ battery life and potentially damage their components. Try to keep your hearing aids in a cool, dry place whenever possible. Avoid leaving them in a hot car, especially inside the glove box, and take care not to expose them to direct sunlight for long periods. If you are outdoors on a hot day, wear a hat or stay in the shade to keep both yourself and your devices cool.
