Why the Expertise Behind Your Care Matters
Hearing aids don't change lives. The expertise behind them does.
Walk into any high street chain and you'll be handed a device. It might be the right device or it might not. The appointment that determined that was probably 45 minutes long, with a clinician balancing your outcome against a sales target they didn't choose and a waiting room they can't clear fast enough.
That's not a criticism of the people - it's a criticism of the system they're working inside.
Here, there's no system like that.
After 30 years working across every corner of audiology - NHS, private practice, complex clinical cases - the single thing that hasn't changed is this: better outcomes come from better listening. Not to the audiogram, to the patient.
Every plan at Beckenham Hearing is built on that foundation.
What that looks like in practice
Appointments aren't rushed. Real ear measurement is standard - not an upsell, not optional, not something reserved for the highest tier. Every device is fitted, calibrated, and adjusted to your specific ear canal and hearing profile. Because two people with the same audiogram do not have the same hearing experience. And a device fitted without REM is, at best, a well-intentioned guess.
There are no manufacturer ties here either, no preferred supplier and no quota. When a recommendation is made, it's made because it's the right device for you - chosen from across the top six global manufacturers - not because it's the one with the best margin this quarter.
As a council member for the Association of Independent Hearing Healthcare Professionals, the standards here aren't just internal. They're part of a wider commitment to raising the bar across independent audiology in the UK.
You won't find that on a high street. You will find it here.

Whether you choose Beckenham Hearing or not, here's what we'd encourage you to ask any provider before you commit.
How long is the initial appointment?
A thorough first assessment takes time. Hearing history, lifestyle, communication needs, ear canal inspection, audiometric testing - done properly, this isn't a 40-minute job. If they can see you and fit you in the same session, that's a red flag, not a convenience.
Who will you see at every appointment?
Continuity of care matters in audiology. A clinician who has seen you across multiple years builds a picture of your hearing health that no new pair of eyes can replicate in a single session. Ask if you'll see the same audiologist and ask if that's guaranteed.
Are they independent?
An audiologist tied to a manufacturer - or employed by a retail chain owned by one - has a structural conflict of interest. It doesn't mean the advice is wrong. It means it can never be entirely impartial. Independence removes that conflict entirely.
